Summer Solstice Music Festival
June 18 – June 22, 2018
The first week will be followed by three mainstage concerts (June 18, 20 and 22) and informal community outreach events.
The St. Lawrence String Quartet, one of the professional groups to perform on the mainstage, will also perform at the Yellowhead Brewery on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 in a special program, String Quartets Rock! featuring the history of the string quartet. [Sorry, this concert is sold out.]
All mainstage concerts will be held at Knox Evangelical Free Church [8403 104 St. NW] [directions] in Old Strathcona (next to the Public Library). Plan on having a dinner in Old Strathcona or getting together with friends at the many restaurants and bars in the vicinity.

In 2009, Juan-Miguel Hernandez won
First Prize at the 16th International
Johannes Brahms Competition, adding

Canadian Music Competition and the 9th
National Sphinx Competition. A dedicated
chamber musician, Juan-Miguel has
collaborated with distinguished artists
such as Itzhak Perlman, Lynn Harrell, and
Kim Kashkashian, as well as jazz living
legends Chick Corea, Gary Burton,
Stanley Clark, and Paquito D'Rivera. He
was a member of the legendary Fine Arts
Quartet and founding member of the
Harlem Quartet. He joins distinguished
musicians of the Edmonton community in

In recent seasons, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has been highlighting first violinist Geoff Nuttall’s admiration for Franz Josef Haydn with a series of concerts in which the foursome explores the composer’s string quartets from various perspectives and then performs the works in their entirety. Nuttall has been hailed as “the Jon Stewart of chamber music.” (New York Times) This program will feature Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 33, No. 3 (“The Bird”).

Festival Artists
Amateur Chamber Music Workshop
Are you a soloist or group that wants to take your performing to the next level this summer?
The Summer Solstice Seminar is the chance for musicians to play and study chamber music and to be coached by violist Lesley Robertson of the St. Lawrence String Quartet; noted pedagogue and cellist Irene Sharp; ESO Concertmaster Robert Uchida; ESO Principal Cello Rafael Hoekman; and Dr. Patricia Tao of the University of Alberta.
- The workshop will take place for five days, from June 12-16, 2018 ending with a performance on June 17, 2018.
- Each group will receive daily two-hour coachings. Coaching will take place in the U of A Dept. of Music between the hours of 4:30 to 8:30 PM.
- Cost:
- $425 per person for duos and trios
- $375 per person for quartets and quintets
- Musicians may apply as a formed group or as an individual. We will make every effort to fit you into a group based on your level of experience and playing.
