España | Friday, June 20, 2014 | 7:30 PM | Program
Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian and guitarist Grisha Goryachev lead a journey of discovery into the musical soul of Spain through haunting songs by Manuel de Falla and Fernando Obradors to flamenco infused works by Albéniz, Enrique Arbós, and Manolo Sanlúcar. Joaquin Turina’s Piano Quartet, an intense and lyrical evocation of the composer’s Andalusian roots, brings the journey to a dramatic conclusion.
Songs of Identity | Saturday, June 21, 2014 | 7:30 PM | Program
The quest to preserve and celebrate the voice of a people links the works in Songs of Identity. Béla Bartók’s Hungarian Folksongs and Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade showcase the legacy of their pioneering studies.
Chant, by the Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov, and Paul Ben-Haim’s Sephardic-themed Songs without Words, reveal the riches to be found in the musical traditions of Eastern Europe and the near East. The song collections of the Armenian composer and scholar Gomidas Vartabed, almost lost to the world in the turbulence of WWI, have been given new life in recent recordings by Isabel Bayrakdarian. She performs a selection of these beautiful works, accompanied by pianist Serouj Kradjian and fellow Festival musicians.
Summer Passion | Sunday, June 22, 2014 | 3 PM | Program
Robertson-Wesley United Church | 10209 – 123 Street Edmonton, AB [map ]
Pre-concert at 2:15 PM featuring Edmonton’s up-and-coming young musicians. This year’s performers include Maya Budzinski, violin; Mendelle Robles, cello; Gabrielle Deprés, violin; and Jessica Quanhui Ma, piano.
Shifting moods define Sunday’s program. It moves from the percussive liveliness of Paganini’s Sonata No. 1 for violin and guitar to the delicate restraint of Grieg’s Andante con moto, the fine first movement of a never-completed piano trio. Two works for soprano and string quartet, Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle and Respighi’s Il Tramonto introduce a mood of reflective melancholy. The program concludes with Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, a work of dramatic volatility and pulsing energy.
